Faeries

April 9, 2012

Happy Easter!

Over the Easter weekend I got to collaborate with my good friend Harmony. We don’t get to work together very often since she lives overseas but any time she happens to come to the island we try to make it count. This time was no exception as she came loaded with ideas. The theme was Faeries.

Involved in the shoot were Krystal (of Kadburry Designs), Jenilee, Ria and Troy. Krystal made pretty much everything that she wore, Harmony made a set of wings and she did Ria’s makeup. Jenilee did Krystal’s makeup, Ria was our long suffering model, and Troy helped out with directing the models.

The one thing that I hate about this kind of shoot is how long the makeup takes. And Harmony is a perfectionist when it comes to makeup so that doesn’t make it any easier! However, once all of the beautifying was done, it was worth it. Ria’s face had an awesome tree bark texture that used real tree bark! Jenilee’s work on Krystal’s face was also superb, she definitely has some talent.

We also had an idea with having our models pose in the water of the nearby beach. That didn’t quite come off as planned since we were there for nearly the entire day and everyone was tired and hungry. Instead of using all of our models, that idea was scaled down to only using Jenilee, but she did a good job. Most of that portion of the shoot was spent waiting for the waves to hit her just right.

I can actually feel an improvement in my skills as a photographer. I was able to manipulate the light pretty well and I didn’t have to do any heavy editing on the photos other than slight exposure tweaks. I have another shoot with Krystal and Troy next week. Hopefully I’ll be as pleased with those results as I am with these ones.

    Very creative.
I think the dark model would have suited the barked look? more. She would have looked more evil. But I love the look.
Also, the dark model looked more comfortable. More camera interaction. Maybe it comes down to experience.
